Work to start in the New Year.
Since the last Village Hall Committee meeting on 6th October, various discussions have been held with Joe Trounson, our Project Co-ordinator, and the contractor who submitted the most satisfactory bid for the refurbishment works. Our aim has been to draw up a plan that will take account of reduced grant funding, enable the works to be done on a staged basis and enable at least some refurbishment to take place in the New Year, with or without grant funding. We are in the favourable position of having raised £40,000 towards the refurbishment but, unfortunately, will not hear the result of our latest grant application, a further £38,000, until early December. We were eager to minimize the period that the Hall would be out of use and to ensure that, under a staged approach, there would not be repeated disruption to users or the necessity to undo works already carried out at an earlier stage. Fortunately, the programme splits neatly, if not entirely evenly, into two, internal and external. The internal works comprise: improving ceiling insulation and acoustic properties; replacing the temporary gully junction between the old hall and new extension; opening out the service area in front of the service counter to give maximum usable space for the existing floor area; re-surfacing the floor; introducing a dado panel around the perimeter of the room to house services and acoustic panels; upgrading / changing the heating; upgrading and enlarging the windows. Although the dates have not yet been confirmed, it is hoped that the contractor will start work on 5th January and complete the internal works by mid-March at the very latest.
The external works, which will not interfere with the use of the Hall, will comprise: recladding and completely re-insulating the external walls of the original Hall; roof repairs. If we are successful with the current grant application, it may be possible to carry out the external works immediately following the internal but they may have to be undertaken at a later date.
The Village Hall Committee regret the disruption that the internal works will cause, particularly to the regular users of the Hall. However, we hope that by organizing the works in this way the disruption will be kept to the minimum possible.
Matthew Brundrett, Secretary, Village Hall Committee.
