Harvest Supper

After a wonderful Harvest Festival Service with an excellent sermon everyone gathered for supper in the Village Hall. With Betty and her wonderful Team of Worker’s approval, Kati and I took on the somewhat daunting task of producing the supper. The support we had from everyone was huge and we were very grateful for it. It was a real team effort, and what a team.

Hannah took on the ticket selling with a team of helpers. The Table Laying Team sorted the Hall and made it look wonderfully welcoming. The Apple Pie Makers sprang into action and produced Pies that would have made Mary Berry’s mouth water. The Table Heads (mainly Men wearing aprons!!) rushed around serving and clearing with good will and enthusiasm. Wonderful table arrangements decked the tables along with conkers and sprouts inviting a ding dong battle (don’t tell the children!!)

Kelvin started the evening by welcoming everyone and saying Grace….

God of goodness, bless our food
Keep us in a pleasant mood.
We thank you for our harvest stew,
And for all the Cooking Crew
Who while we keep a brimming cup,
Give us freedom from the washing up.

Betty was in charge of ringing the bell to indicate the clearing and serving of food!!. All went well, there was a wonderful team of servers who got the food onto plates at a terrific speed. There was one puzzling moment over supper which involved a recipe for Dauphinoise Potatoes. We tried to contact a friend from the village who knows a delicious recipe for this dish…. she was on holiday in Italy, but another friend sent a text asking her for the recipe. This was the reply:

RECIPE FOR POTS Slice up pots (raw) v thin in a food processor. Sauté briefly in butter and garlic. Cover in quantities of full cream milk. Put in casserole dish Bake until cooked and brown. About 40 mins. No, don’t bake in oven twice! Oh, and boil up in milk until starch thickens milk sort of…. Then put in casserole and bake in oven, but not twice. Too much vino. We had a wine tasting tonight. Hic!! Oh, and don’t forget to bake in oven.
We didn’t follow the recipe to the letter, but … thanks Janie!!! Well, what fun.

Thank you to everyone who took part, in coming, helping and eating. The Harvest is in, the men can hang up their aprons and relax….. until next year.
P.S. a total of 72 people attended and £600.86 was raised for church funds.
