The guest speaker for our September meeting was unfortunately unable to attend so after the WI business, our resourceful Programme Secretary, Chris King, had prepared a cryptic quiz associated with Shropshire towns for us. It made us all think a bit and we really enjoyed the challenge. It was also the day when the Queen became the longest serving monarch and there were numerous old newspapers displayed around the hall reporting on her ascension which we all found really interesting. Everybody remarked that it had been a very enjoyable and social meeting. There was a steady stream of members, friends and visitors to St Mary’s Church, Caynham, to see the Centenary Celebrations, the handicraft displays from Clee Hill, Caynham Ashford and Knowbury were exceptional and they were greatly admired. The cakes were up to the usual standard and tasted delicious. All proceeds will be donated to the ACWW. On 16th September, thirteen of our members travelled by rail to Llanfair PG on Anglesey and visited the Toll House and little museum where the very first Women’s Institute in Britain was founded, one hundred years to the day. After admiring the varied and interesting items on display some of the ladies walked to St Mary’s Church mentioned in the village’s name (the longest in Britain) and then went down to the banks of the Menai Straits. They did manage a visit to Pringles for a spot of retail therapy before catching the train and speeding back to Ludlow in the sunshine.
