Jackie Brundrett has received a Christmas card from the Strawberry Pickers who work for the Bowdens. The card is directed to the whole village and reads;
Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year from Bulgaria! Thank you all for being so kind to all workers on the farm through all the years so far.
Have a very successful New 2014.
It is a charming handmade card and is on display in the Village Hall by the Bar.

Minutes of Ashford Carbonell Village Hall Committee Meeting 4th December 2013

3.Minutes of the Meetings held on 15th October 2013 The minutes of the 191st meeting held on 15th October 2013 were agreed as correct and signed by the Chairman.
4.Correspondence The Treasurer had received a letter from HMRC concerning Gift Aid submissions. It was AGREED that the Treasurer should update the list of signatories and responsible persons.
5.Hall Development
Plans for the proposed refurbishment were available to the meeting.
A planning application had been submitted prior to the meeting due to the time constraints for submitting a grant application to Veolia, which would require prior planning approval. The meeting discussed the plans, focussing on the external appearance of the Hall. Some members felt that a mock Tudor appearance would be preferable to plain screeding. It was AGREED that the secretary should draw up a ‘flyer’ to be circulated to the village explaining what was proposed and the underlying rationale of the alterations.
6.Post Office The Chairman reported that Mr Walker had confirmed his intention to retire and that he had notified the Post Office that the Village Hall would charge rent in future. It was AGREED that the secretary should contact the Post Office to confirm the arrangements.
7.Store Room The reorganization of the storeroom was ongoing. The meeting discussed racking systems and it was suggested that David and Jackie Brundrett may be able to assist.
8.Field Lease It was AGREED that the Village Hall should pay for the registration of the field as a sports and recreation ground with the Land Registry as this would facilitate the process of ownership transfer.
9.Finance The Hall current account stood at £13,472 and it was AGREED that £3,000 should be transferred to the Building Fund (currently £24,264). £242 had been repaid by British gas following previous overcharges.
The Treasurer reported that the annual accounts had been audited and were ready for submission to the Charity Commission. JB requested an updated list of member details to submit with the Charity Commission annual return.
10.Hall Hirings The Bookings Secretary reported that that the new arrangements were working well but that bookings had been fairly quiet.
11.Fabric and Grounds Mowing Contract The monthly payments were continuing. No request had been received for payment for the additional works carried out.
Bowling Green Some concern was expressed at the condition of the bowling green and recent dog fowling. A low fence may be appropriate and JB was asked to obtain quotes. Funds for repairs may be available from the Local Joint Committee.
12.Past Events. Flanders & Swan. A very successful event with £510 raised. The Committee expressed their thanks to the Jones’ and helpers.
Flicks in the Sticks.A disappointing turn-out for Life of Pi but a full house for Linclon.

Our December meeting takes the form of our Annual Supper on Saturday 7th at 7:00pm at St Peters as usual any further information ..contact me . Being a double Parish Magazine addition ..on January 15th 2014 we have Angela Siminson coming to talk on Garden design . I think we all need help on that subject ,we could pick up some handy hints. A rather unusual start to the evening began with the President introducing Edmond Hawen who showed us his display of baskets and explained the rudiments of basket making, he then continued making a basket whilst everyone turned around and the business meeting began.
Jo Hall asked for individual application forms claiming the lottery grant, she then stated that Denman had agreed to provide a special package for a group of members (minimum 12) on an agreed subject if a course was not available, early in March.
It was agreed that the Christmas celebrations would be afternoon tea at Fishmore Hall starting at 3.30 pm on our normal meeting day 11th December.
The Secretary gave a summary of our activities over the last twelve months, we have enjoyed a busy and successful year with a wide variety of speakers, several outings all culminating with our 90th year Birthday Celebrations.
The President thanked all the committee members for their work and particularly those who will be leaving the Committee. She commented on the growing strength of the craft group and the walking group which is an indication of the success of the branch as a whole. Jenny was unanimously re-elected President and looked forward to another year of entertainment and fun.
We turned around once more to admire the basket Mr Hewen was putting the finishing touches to, he was thanked by Barbara Roberts.
The first meeting of 2014 will be held in Ashford Village Hall on Wednesday 8th January at 7.30p.m. If you are feeling a little deflated after all the excitement of Christmas and New Year Celebrations why not come along and join us. We will be pleased to see you and you can be sure of a warm welcome.

The November meeting offered an assortment of things to create, with some Xmas bunting being the favourite. A look at tapestry work got some people thinking about possible future projects.
There is quite a spread of interests and expertise within the group, from complete novices to experts skilled in a particular craft. What is so good about the group is the willingness and eagerness to share skills and develop new ones. The share and tell moments encourage anyone who has undertaken a piece of work to bring it and share it with the group. There were some lovely pieces of work shared at the last session which included a recently made cafetiere cosy, some small Christmas themed quilts, a tapestry wall-hanging and footstool and a couple of delightful little sewing boxes. It was very inspiring and may well lead to some of the skills being covered in future workshops. A ‘Teddies for Tragedies’ charity knit, complete with its drawstring bag, was donated and some small animal knitting patterns were added to the box of ideas for charity makes.
A workshop session is always available at each meeting as an option. Members are very welcome to bring their own work and there is a helping hand available if needed. A number of resources are at hand and a sewing machine is available for use at every session.
The next meeting of the group is on Monday 16th December at the village hall when there will be a workshop on making a Xmas cracker, which I’m sure will be a fun event. The main materials will be supplied but do bring along 3 toilet roll inner tubes if you can, along with anything else you would like to use in your cracker.
The January meeting will be held on Monday 20th January 2014, when thoughts will begin to turn to Spring!

The Draft Minutes of a Parish Council Meeting held at Ashford Carbonell Village Hall on Tuesday 12th November 2013
1. Present: Councillors: Mrs E Marrs (Chairman), Mr N Tilt, Mr M Bowden, Mr D Brundrett and Mr G Jones
2. Apologies: Mrs V Parry Shropshire Councillor
3. Items from Members of the Public/Shropshire Council:
A member of the public raised the village hall playing field and the current negotiations being undertaken by the Village Hall Committee concerning ownership boundaries, the Parish Council wished them success in the negotiations.
4. Declarations of Interest: Mr G Jones – planning application 13/0434/TCA
5. To approve the Minutes of the Previous Meeting: The minutes of the meetings dated the 17th September 2013 were approved by the council and signed as a correct record by the Chairman.
6. Matters Arising from the Minutes: No matters arising from the minutes on items not included in the agenda.
7. Chairman’s Communications a) The Chairman reported on the meeting of the Ludlow and Clee Local Joint Committee which had received a presentation from Mr B Longmore West Midlands Police Commissioner who referred to the problems of cybercrime and the problems of theft in rural areas particularly from out-buildings.
Reference was also made to changes in the Planning Process at Shropshire Council and the possible closure of the recycling centre at Coder Road Ludlow.
b) The Chairman also updated the meeting on the rural broadband campaign for faster broadband facilities.
8. Planning Items: a) The Clerk referred to the proposed changes to the planning process which will see 98% of Planning applications determined by planning officers and the reduction in the number of planning area committees to one central Shropshire planning committee based in Shrewsbury.
b) Planning application 13/04374/TCA – removal of branches of one Walnut Tree and crown lift to 10ft and remove two branches of a second Walnut Tree- The Bannuts Ashford Carbonell - Mr G Jones left the meeting for this item – No Objection
c) Planning application 13/04499/Ful – Erection of a single storey extension to front – Kirkby Lodge 4 The Hayles Ashford Carbonell – No Objection
9. Highway/Amenity Items:
a) The Clerk reported that he was still pursuing to move the speed hazard warning light on the Caynham Road by the School entrance to the previously agreed new position.
b) A question had been raised with the Chairman concerning the flashing warning lights which were at Caynham School as if these could be installed by the Bishop Hooper School. The Clerk reported that this was referred to in May 2012 where it was reported that Shropshire Council usually only install a Caynham type arrangement where there are large numbers of children crossing the road on the school frontage or getting into cars or buses parked on the highway and was therefore not appropriate for Ashford Crabonell.
c) Concern was raised at the speed of some vehicles travelling through the village and it was suggested that a polite sign should be erected at the entrance to the village asking drivers to drive carefully when driving through the village. The Clerk will seek advice from Shropshire Council on appropriate safety measures that could be used and the possibility of an appropriate sign.
d) The Chairman reported that the defibrillator had been delivered and the Parish Council agreed to pay for the installation costs of approximately £300 with the defibrillator being installed on the outside of the village hall. Training of volunteers would be held on the 3rd December 2013 any person interested should contact the Chairman Mrs E Marrs.
e) Replacement trees for the two Chestnut trees that had been removed one by the School and the other at land at the Forde Ashford Carbonell should soon be delivered to a collection point in Ludlow. The Parish Council would arrange to collect and plant the tree in the land at the Forde and Shropshire Council would be responsible for planting the tree at the School.
f) Mr N Tilt will try and make arrangements for the clearance of the bridleway which runs from Dumblehole Lane by Kirkenel Farm House to the river adjacent to Barretts Mill as Shropshire Council had given this low priority for clearance.
g) The Parish Council had no objection to the Village Hall Committee closing the Post Office Facility due to lack of users and that the space in the hall could be better utilised.
10. Financial Items:

We plan to do some light-hearted Carol Singing around Ashford Carbonel with the children on Saturday 21st December. All children and their parents/grandparents are welcome to join us. We will meet in the Village Hall car park at 4pm and finish at Brookside (Hannah’s house) where there will be tea laid on for the children and some mulled wine for the parents.
Please look out for us and let us know if you’d like us to call on you on our way round!
